South Carolina ratified the Constitution on May 23, 1788. Its Senate seats were declared vacant in July 1861 owing to its secession from the Union. They were again filled from July 1868.

List of living former U.S. Senators

As of October 2016, there are two former Senators who are living, both from Class 3. The most recent senator to die was Strom Thurmond of Class 2 (1954-1956, 1956-2003) on June 26, 2003. The most recent Class 3 senator to die was Donald S. Russell (1965-1966) on February 22, 1998.
